The time it was about Wicked Saints

Posted March 27, 2019 by Stacee in Blog Tours, Interviews | 6 Comments

I had seen a lot of people talking about Wicked Saints and when Wednesday Books sent me an arc and then an invite to be part of the blog tour, I couldn’t resist!

I’m stupid behind on review books, so I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but it’s coming up soon and I can’t wait.  Especially since one of my queens, Leigh Bardugo, highly recommended the story.

Before we get to the mini interview with Emily, let’s check out the book!

Title: Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy #1)
Author: Emily A. Duncan
Pages: 400
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Pub Date: April 2, 2019
Find it: Macmillan | Indiebound | B&N | Amazon | Goodreads

A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself.

A prince in danger must decide who to trust.

A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings.

Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war.

In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light. Wicked Saints is the thrilling start to Emily A. Duncan’s devastatingly Gothic Something Dark and Holy trilogy.

Sounds good, right?

1. Please give the elevator pitch for Wicked Saints.

Wicked Saints is a dark fantasy about a girl who talks to the gods who has to team up with two enemy blood mages in an attempt to assassinate a king and stop a holy war. Also there are monsters and just a lot of weirdness.

2. Why do you love Nadezhda and Serefin and why should readers root for them?

I like the idea of rooting for a character in a book where literally every character has committed some kind of atrocity in their short lives. I love Nadya because she’s empathetic in a world of violence, she’s the kind of character who wants to listen and understand, not necessarily burn down the world, but she’ll do what she has to. Serefin is a traumatized boy who has known literally nothing but violence his whole life. He makes bad choices when he makes them at all; mostly he just wants to alternate between heavy drinking and taking naps (he does not get the latter, ever. He needs a nap). But he cares, he wants to fix things, he’s just not always so great about his methods.

3. You find out that you’re being published for the first time. Describe the next 5 minutes.

Ha. This wasn’t a particularly dramatic moment for me. I got the call from my agent right when I was clocking into work on an incredibly busy day in the summer. I didn’t really have a whole lot of time to process it in the next five minutes! It did make me all shaky, though, the knowledge that something I had been working toward for so long was actually happening.

I was so excited for this book until the author’s negative comments and actions on social media, especially the ones devaluing reviewers and influencers, made me not what to read her work anymore :/

It was a month or two ago when the whole debate over book bloggers and ARCs were being discussed on Twitter. Alongside negative comments, she went and blocked a ton of bloggers and reviewers, some she hadn’t even spoken to before.
