The time it was Reading Rewind {17}

Hi guys! Here we are for another episode of Reading Rewind!

So, I’ve been thinking of rereading this book for a while now and I finally broke down and did it.

This month’s choice was Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas and yes, I have the cheerleader Celaena cover.

1. When did you originally read the book and what did you rate it?

I originally read the arc in June 2012 and gave it 5 stars. + it was on several of my extra shelves: all of the stars, all of the swoons, I want to hang out with them, and will forever reread

2. Why did you love it?

My review said:

I am so in love with this book. It was sort of forced on me by a friend and I wasn’t too sure that I’d like it, but it was amazing. It’s the sort of story that had me sneaking off to the back room at work to read a page or two and then when I got to the last 50 or so pages, I was trying to slow down to make it last.

Celaena is a kick ass heroine. She’s smart and fierce and I want to hang out with her. Not only for her to teach me how to beat people up, but she’s witty and has such a great sense of humor. I was rooting for her from the very beginning.

Did I mention there are TWO swoony boys to choose from? They couldn’t possibly be more opposite, but they are both delightful in their own way and with each page, I couldn’t decide who I adored more. The interactions that Celaena has with each of them is just perfection. We get to see different facets of her in her dealings with the boys.

Oh. And there’s magic. And evil stuff. And fighting. And mean boys who take my girl for granted.

I’m already debating whether or not I want to just start this book over again right now. I can’t wait for the hardcover and e-book to come out because I want ALL OF THE VERSIONS. That’s how much I loved it.

I knew that I had loved the book, but I don’t remember this review…and I think I actually did a blog review for it, but I could be making that up.  I have done a lot of promo for this series as I was a Throne of Glass Ambassador.

3. After the re-read did your rating/feelings about it change? Why or why not?

Sadly, I couldn’t make it through a reread.  I DNF’d at 49% and changed my rating to 3 stars. Even though it should probably be lower, I’m giving past Stacee the benefit of the doubt.

I found Celaena to be bratty and was super annoyed that she always! talked! with! exclamation! points!  Dorian and Chaol were promising, but they weren’t as charming as they were the first time I read. And while it was mildly interesting to see things here {like the ring on Cain or Lady Kaltain} while knowing what happens in the later books, the competition was boring and didn’t captivate me. I was torn between wanting to keep reading to get to some of my previously favorite scenes {the bag of candy and of course “Get up”}, but I was also wary of them being ruined forever.

Unfortunately, I have fallen out of love with this series.  I DNF’d EoS and I have no plans to read either Tower of Dawn {even though I love Chaol} or the very last book {which I have no idea what the name is.} I was hoping to read ToG as a kind of stand alone.  I thought I could read it separate from all of the other books. I did sort of succeed, but there wasn’t enough to keep my interest to continue reading.

The bottom line is that I just didn’t care about the story or the characters. There are too many books I have for review that I’m insanely excited for and I didn’t want to waste the time and effort to continue this one when I was feeling so meh about it.

I often do this to some books that I read when I was younger. I gave City of Bones 5 stars but when I read it again I find so many problems…. And I am one of the people who can’t stand Throne of Glass series anymore. I stopped after QoS and have no interest in continuing it. There are just too many minuses in the series.

yeah, i’ve given up on the tog series and i’m going to try the upcoming novella to decide if i want to keep reading that acotar series too. there are just too many good books to keep reading things i’m not interested in.

      thanks for commenting!

I agree! Celaena is annoying and gets more so as the series unfolds. I could not stand Chaol. When read his new book I thought maybe I misjudged him but it turns out I was right, he’s not a character I can trust. For me Chalk has his priorities mixed up. I like the way Dorian is evolving. But there are so many characters and I am so tired of this series. I just want to know the ending!!!! Even lord of the Rings ended!!!! Time to wrap it up Sarah Maas

i agree with there being too many characters! even with being somewhat familiar with everyone, it was still too much to process for me. I do want to know the overall ending, but i’ll just read the last couple of chapters of the last book and i’ll be good.

This is one of the reasons I don’t reread books (except picture books) besides the fact I have a huge TBR pile. I want to remember the magic of loving a book and don’t want to fall out of love with it.

i can see that. i’m definitely having fun with this feature and going back to read some favorites always helps when i don’t want to read anything.

I think it’s a good thing to re-read your favorite books because it helps you see how your tastes have evolved.

  4. Eee, I cannot help but love this post so so so so much, haha. <3 I hope that doesn't make me a terrible person :) See, I tried this book too. As an eARC via Netgalley back before it came out. I had to DNF it before page 80. And I read a lot of popular books back then. Yet I could not get into this one. At all. And since then, I have not read a single book by this author. And I am so so so so happy about that, haha :) (Because it seems like all she writes right now is smutsmutsmut, and all the same scenes.. just. Yeah. I want more diverse than that.) But aaaanyway. I'm sure the author is really nice. <3 Just her books are not for me. Sigh. And oh, I am so sad for you, that the book you loved so much back then turned out to be so shitty right now :\ It has happened to me too, when re-reading a book I loved. It suuucks when it happens. But, hih, I cannot help but be a little bit happy that you did not like this book this time around :) Aaaanyway. Your review is lovely and awesome. <3 Thank you for sharing Stacee :) Sorry for this very long comment. <3

I have to admit I enjoy her secondary characters more than her main characters and I continue to read her books because I want to know what happens to them.

In A Court of Mist and Fury the sex scenes were so explicit I told my local librarian it should not be in the children’s library.

  5. I have the novella bind-up and the first three titles as ebooks because all of my blogging buddies back in the day were telling me I needed to read them. I am glad they were all $1.99 ebook specials because I hate assassin books, I don’t mind stories with assassins in them, I just don’t like over 50% of the story being about that. I will never read them. After four plus years of blogging I have fallen in with a core group of buddy bloggers who have such similar tastes that none of them have read any of these books. Ha ha. ?
